Impacting News Events

community events

If you turn on the television or pick up a newspaper, you will most likely find many news events that are “news worthy.” But just what does it take to make a story worth printing or airing on the 6 o’clock news? It could be information about the performing arts or a news cast featuring president-elect, Barack Obama. One of the first things is that it must be interesting to certain individuals.

News events have to be of interest to those that are reading or viewing them in order to captivate readers and viewers. But what makes a story interesting? Most national storylines are interesting to a multitude of individuals because they impact our nation as a whole. But community events can also be interesting when presented to the community that they are happening in. Simply put, a story about local events, such as a concert in Gulfport Mississippi, might not be of huge interest in another town unless it affects individuals there also. But even in the towns where special events are happening, the story must capture the interest of those viewing it. It is all in the placement and presentation of the material.

Does the story carry an impact or is there a conflict involved? Is it relevant? These are some of the qualifications that news professionals use to decide whether a story is indeed newsworthy. The timeliness of a news event is one huge factor. A story about swimming safety in a local newspaper will draw more attention to itself if it is printed during the summer than if it is printed in December. Local events can be very newsworthy, especially if they make an impact on the audience. To make an impact, a story simply has to have an effect on a large number of viewers or readers. It is all about giving the readers or viewers information that they want to read, whether it is about community events, sporting events or upcoming festivals.

These days, almost everyone is interested in news stories featuring information about the president-elect, Barack Obama, because of the timeliness of the story. But other stories, including community events in small town newspapers can draw just as much attention because of the impact that it has on those who reside in the community. Individuals who make their living reporting news events are in charge of presenting the news in a way that draws the audience in and makes them want to read or view the information.
