Physician Assistant education programs are two years and many PA programs have clinical teaching affiliations with medical schools. To qualify for admission to a PA program, some college and healthcare experience is required. Typical PA students have a bachelors degree and approximately four years of experience in a healthcare career, commonly nursing, EMT, or paramedic. PA’s receive hands-on clinical training and usually rotate through several areas of specialized medicine, including geriatrics, pediatrics, gynecology, and psychiatry.

Physician Assistants are required to pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination, administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and is open only to graduates of accredited PA schools. PA’s must log 100 hours of continuing education every two years and sit for a recertification exam every six years.

Schools should be aware of this due to the amount of time they spend teaching about the importance of healthy food choices. School vending machines make it too easy for children to eat poorly, which makes the schools seem hypocritical. This could all be fixed with a few changes. By changing what is available in the food vending machines the schools can change the children’s habits.

Schools do not have to fill their vending machines with cookies and candy. School vending machines can just as easily be filled with trail mixes and nutrition bars. This does not have to be a controversial issue. It is most likely that schools never intended to create a bad menu for their students, especially with the rate of childhood obesity. They see an easy way to make money for their school, which is not necessarily wrong. The problem lies in the food choices and if that can be changed, then school food vending will be better.
