Starting a business takes some big decisions and one of the biggest is what type of software to use for your retail activities. People with little experience f this can get confused by all the options available. There is software to control inventory, software for accounting, software for employee management, and packages that promise to do it all.
If you want a tool that is convenient and best for customer service then you should go for an electronic point of sale or EPoS system. If your stock levels are high then you can use barcodes to count sales of individual items. You can combine the benefits of a cash register till with those of retail technology with an EPoS system. Although the investment for this system is big, it does make a huge difference to the efficiency of your business.
However if you do not want to buy an EPoS system, these are the alternatives.
The basic things that you will need are a database to control inventory and spreadsheets for accounting. Microsoft Office or similar technology would work for the spreadsheets but can be a real hassle for business owners to manage. And databases can be difficult to get to grips on if you are inexperienced.
That is why all-in-one packages are better. There are many software packages readily available that are directed for retail business use. The more functions your package can do the more money it will cost. Be honest and think about how many customers will visit you on a weekly basis. Expensive large items might only sell a few per week so your accounts package can be run from one machine. The sales transaction can be done on a cash register till. Then you can record the sale on your computer once the customer leaves.
If you will be selling many more items and have a larger inventory, you will need more. A simple till will not record the details of each sale as they happen so you need a more advanced accounting system. However you will still need a machine to print receipts, take credit card sales and recording the sales as they happen.
