What Characteristics Are Required To Be A Good Team Leader?

What does one need to do to become a good team leader? How can one earn the respect and trust of the members of the team? We all know just what a pivotal role a team leader has and hence the importance of the above questions. I have asked a number of my friends what they thought were the answers to these questions:

I was speaking to a managing director of a well known professional composite door company about this very subject only last week. He stated that a good manager needs to be the role model of the team. They should therefore have excellent time management skills, be a good communicator, be well dressed and have a positive approach to life and any tasks that are undertaken.

Another friend who offers cheap holidays in the UK had previously spent time in a management role within a large financial organisation. Honesty, integrity, fairness were words that he used to describe the characteristics required and he also stated that a team leader should not have any “favourites” within the team; they need to treat every member in the same way.

You should not ask a member of the team to do something that you would not personally do yourself stated Ian who makes it possible for people to make cheap calls. I personally believe that a team leader should be prepared to muck in to show that they are also a fully working member of the team and not just a delegator. A team leader needs to be able to offer full support to each member of staff whatever issues arise, personal or professional.

I know that there is a lot to take in but also hope that the team leaders out there have learnt a thing or two.

With a path so open and available, why don’t more people get on it and go where they want to go? It is probably because of a fork in the road. People are going to go in one of two directions. Their wants and needs or thos of others. Many are so blinded by their own personal wants that they give very little thought to filling the needs of others.

Jill knows what she wants form her husband, but what he wants never fully gets through to her.

The foreman knows he wants those lug bolts tightended as the body frame comes down the assembly line, but what does the one doing the tightening really want?

The parent know the way they want their children to grow up, but do they really show as much consern for what the childeren want emotionally, that is?

The salesman has a strong desire to sell the stove but is almost afraid to ask about the prospect’s wants, for fear the product won’t fit.

Pete feels that Jane does not love him the way he wants to be loved. Maybe it’s because he has been blind to her wants and needs.

The teacher wants the dull, sleepy eyed teen to be more attentive, but what does the gawky young stalk of humanity really want? Has anyone thought about that?

And so it goes. Everyone wants something from someone else yet become frustrated when it’s not fothcoming.

Do you know what happens many times? They start applying an upside down version of the rule. They try punishing people just what people do not want, in an effort to get what they want.

The air gets chilly when Jane doesn’t get what she wants from Pete. The foreman chews out the lug bolt tightener. The parents scold, and spank and threaten when the children do not fit the mold. The salesman jabbers on desperately when it appears the prospect is only lukewarm. “Perhaps Jane will shape up if I make her jealous,” Pete reasons. And the teacher threatens, shames, and disciplines, in futile attempts to shake off the teenager’s lethargy.

And that is the story of the human in a highly individualized society. Divorces, splits in families, high job turnover, heavy hearts, wasted cares, crumbled dreams, lonely lives all haunted by ineffective efforts to relate to others. I mentioned this in my last article. Discover what people want. Then help them get it. That’s the way to reverse most of those distressing situations.

It is just another way of describing the rule.Or at least the first part of it, that: To the degree you give others what they want. They in turn will give you what you want.

HACCP System application and the ISO 22000:2005 standard

Your HACCP system can be substantially improved using by following the requirements of the ISO 22000 standard.ISO 22000 clause 7.2 Prerequisite Programmes states the requirement to establish programmes to assist in controlling the introduction of food safety hazards to the product through the work environment, preventing contamination of the product and limiting food safety hazard levels in the product and product processing environment.

ISO 22000 clause 7.2.3 states that construction and lay-out of buildings/premises, workspace, employee facilities; supplies of utilities, waste disposal, adequate equipment, management of purchased materials, storage and transport, prevention of cross contamination, sanitation, pest control and personnel hygiene should be taken into consideration when establishing prerequisite programmes.The first step in developing an ISO 22000 compliant HACCP system is to establish a food safety team multi-disciplinary knowledge and experience. The food safety team are required to carry out a number of preliminary steps in order to carry out the hazard analysis. ISO 2000 requires the food safety team to describe the product characteristics including raw materials, ingredients, product contact materials, end products and the intended use of the end product. The food safety team will then need to prepare flow diagram and confirm the flow diagram physically on site.ISO 22000 clause 7.3.5.2 the food safety team to describe each process step and the existing control measures applied at each step.This is the last step required prior to hazard analysis.

The food safety team now conduct a hazard analysis, as per the requirements of ISO 22000 clause 7.4.2, to identify all the food safety hazards that are reasonably likely to occur. The next step is for the food safety team to assess each hazard identified then consider and select the control measures required to achieve the acceptable level of hazard. The food safety team need to review each control measure and its effectiveness to decide if the control measure is to be part of the HACCP plan or to be controlled by operational prerequisite programmes.ISO 22000 clause 7.5 requires the food safety team to establish and document operational prerequisite programmes including the food safety hazard to be controlled, the control measure, the monitoring procedures, corrections and corrective actions to be taken if out of control, the responsibilities and authorities and the records to be completed.

Following the ISO 22000 systematic approach the next step is for the food safety team to establish the HACCP plan. Standard CODEX HACCP principles, identification of critical control points, determination of critical limits for each critical control point, monitoring of critical control points and actions when monitoring results exceed critical limits are included in ISO 22000 clause 7.6. Verification is included in clause 7.8. The food safety hazard to be controlled at the critical control point, the control measure, the monitoring procedures, critical limits the records to be used, the corrections and corrective actions to be taken if out of control, and responsibilities and authorities are all required to be included in the HACCP plan. Clause 8.2 describes the requirement for validation of operational PRP and HACCP plan control measures and combinations.ISO 22000 has further specific documentation requirements are prescribed in clause 4.2 which requires that documents and records required by the food safety management system to be controlled.

Product characteristics, intended use, flow diagrams, process steps and control measures should be updated when the HACCP plan and/or operational prerequisite programmes have been completed as per the requirements of ISO 22000 clause 7.7.After updating the preliminary information the food safety team should then decide if the HACCP plan and/or prerequisite programmes documents need to be amended.ISO 22000 Clause 8.4.2 requires the food safety team review the results of verification activities, if verification does not demonstrate conformity a review of the conclusions of the hazard analysis, operational PRPs and the HACCP plan.Finally ISO 22000 clause 8.5.2 prescribes that the food safety team evaluate the food safety management system at planned intervals, based on this review the team must then consider whether it is necessary to review the hazard analysis, operational PRP(s) and the HACCP plan.
